A first in North India, other than the national capital, the recent medical advancement achieved by Patel Hospital is the introduction of 'Centre for Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery' at Patel Hospital.
According to Dr Swapan Sood, Medical Superintendent, MS (Surgery), M.Ch. (AIIMS), Consultant Urologist, Andrologist, Kidney Transplant & Uro-Robotic Surgeon at Patel Hospital, Jalandhar, Patients come from across the northern region and the long waiting list outside in the hospital it’s enough to prove its excellence as Medical facility. “We started the 'Centre for Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery' at Patel Hospital, Jalandhar last month. A US based technology, there are more than 8000 Robot's in USA, while till date only 60 Robots have been installed in India at various hospitals and ours is the 22nd centre in the country till date”
“Robotic Surgery is the most advanced surgical technology through which the patients can heal faster, suffer less pain and scarring, and get back to their lives faster than ever before. While the Robotic Surgeries in Delhi cost somewhere close to Rs 6 lakh, at Patel Hospital the surgery expenses came close to Rs 3 lakh only”
Traditional large open incisions are not necessary rather small incisions are made to access the area of the body requiring treatment. “Surgeons specially trained in laparoscopic techniques can use tiny devices containing cameras to view the area, manipulate the tissue and perform the necessary surgical intervention”
WHAT IS ROBOTIC SURGERY?
The da Vinci Robotic Surgical System is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. The surgeon controls the robot as it translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient's body. Though it is often called a robot, it cannot act on its own. Instead, the surgery is performed with unmatched precision entirely by the surgeon. Together, the robotic technology, highly skilled surgeon and surgical team perform complex procedures through just a few tiny openings.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ROBOTIC SURGERY COMPARED WITH TRADITIONAL (OPEN) METHODS OF SURGERY?
Compared to the previous lengthy open surgeries, Robotic Surgery patients experience significantly less pain, less blood loss and fewer blood transfusions, minimally invasive surgical option for women with large, numerous or difficult to access fibroids, fewer complications and risk of infection, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and return to normal activities and small, dime-sized incisions for minimal scarring.
