| ABOUT COUNSELLING |
All of us experience stress nearly
every day of our lives. Stress is a phenomena cutting across age barriers, sex,
or socio-economic status, effecting almost every one from school going children
to house wives, to executives, professionals and even the elderly. When this
stress is used positively, it can be used as a motivator to do our tasks on time
and efficiently. However the negative management of stress can cause innumerable
problems, which psychologist Hans Selye has termed 'dystress' or stress which is
harmful for the body. Stress leads to negative thinking, anxiety, fear,
lethargy, inability to pursue our goals and in more serious cases, depression,
suicidal thoughts, psychosomatic disorder and insomnia. Counselling helps us to manage our stress
effectively, change our attitude and planout our routines more effectively.
Where lifestyle changes are required, they are suggested also. Counseling is a
process of sharing a problem with the trained counselor, who is objective,
non-judgemental, empathetic and will offer full confidentiality. In the
comforting environment provided through the process of the counselling, the
client experiences relief from his problem, confidence in himself and personal
growth.
Counseling is specially recommended for
persons suffering from depression, anxiety, insomnia, psychosomatic disorders,
interpersonal problems, lack of self confidence, ineffective communication
skills, or inability to form relationships. Counselling is also offered for
persons suffering from chronic illness or debilitating diseases like cancer,
which often lead to psychological stress.
Children suffering from behavioral problems
such as bed wetting, stammering, nail biting, pica, aggression, shyness etc. are
greatly benefited through counselling.

| FAIMLY COUNSELLING |
The family is one of the oldest and most successful social
institutions, nurturing and bringing up individuals and providing its members
love, care, security and satisfying all their physical and emotional needs.
However, sometimes the family becomes the cause of many
psychological problems such as stress, depression, low self -esteem, etc, in
individuals and any treatment of the individual involves family counseling, where
the family is made aware of the problem and advised on changes-behavioral,
physical, attitudinal, towards the patient and each member of the family is made
aware of the dynamics within the family, and how it affects each one. This
entire process is called family counselling. |

For Addiction: Alcoholism has “killed
more people, sent more victims to hospitals, generated more police arrests,
broken up more marriages and homes and cost industry more money than has the
abuse of heroin, barbiturates and marijuana combined”. |
| Therapy:-1. Family therapy
– this is to get the alcoholic to concede that he has a drinking problem and
that there are resources available for helping to deal with it. In the give and
take of family therapy the alcoholic is forced to face his problem and to
recognize the possible disastrous consequences. Family treatment is the central
focus of the therapeutic effort. Since family members are the victims of the
alcoholic they tend to become judgmental about the addicted person. They also
need regular counselling sessions. 2. Cognitive behavioral therapy:
- this therapy is provided on an individual basis. This involves analyzing the
reasons or events that lead to a persons addiction and to generate a series of
possible alternate responses to those situations to discuss short and long term
consequences and rehabilitation. |

| INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING | DEPRESSION | What is Depression ?
Depression is a mental health disorder that can affect the
way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself, and the way you think
about things. A depressive disorder is more than a passing mood. It is not a
sign of personal weakness and it cannot be willed or wished away. A depressive disorder involves
the body, mood and thoughts. People who are depressed cannot "snap out of it"
and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for months or years.
Treatments such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy can reduce and
sometimes eliminate the symptoms of depression.
Major Depression The sufferer seems to walk around with the weight of the world on his or her shoulders. He or she seems disinterested in becoming involved in regular activities and seems convinced that he or she will always be in this hopeless state. There is a lack of interest in sexual activity and in appetite and a weight loss.
Atypical Depression: The sufferer is sometimes able to experience happiness and moments of elation. Symptoms of atypical depression include fatigue, oversleeping, overeating and weight gain. People who suffer from atypical depression believe that outside events control their mood (i.e. success, attention and praise). Episodes of atypical depression can last for months or a sufferer may live with it forever. Psychotic Depression: Sufferers of psychotic depression begin to hear and see imaginary things - - sounds, voices and visuals that do not exist. These are referred to as hallucinations, which are generally more common with someone suffering from schizophrenia. The hallucinations are not "positive" like they are with a manic depressive. The sufferer of psychotic depression imagines frightening and negative sounds and images.
Dysthymia: Many people just walk around seeming depressed - - simply sad, blue or melancholic. They have been this way all of their lives. This is dysthymia - - a condition that people are not even aware of but just live with daily. They go through life feeling unimportant, dissatisfied, frightened and simply don't enjoy their lives. Medication is beneficial for this type of depression. Manic
Depression: Manic depression can be defined as an emotional disorder
characterized by changing mood shifts from depression to mania which can
sometimes be quite rapid. People who suffer from manic depression have an
extremely high rate of suicide. |

STRESS | What is Stress ?
Stress is the emotional and physical strain caused by our response to pressure from the outside world. Common stress reactions include tension, irritability, inability to concentrate, and a variety of physical symptoms that include headache and a fast heartbeat.
It's almost impossible to live without some stress. And most of us wouldn't want to, because it gives life some spice and excitement. But if stress gets out of control, it may harm your health, your relationships, and your enjoyment of life.
Am I in control of stress or is stress controlling me?
* When I feel agitated, do I know how to quickly calm and soothe myself?
* Can I easily let go of my anger?
* Can I turn to others at work to help me calm down and feel better?
* When I come home at night, do I walk in the door feeling alert and relaxed?
* Am I seldom distracted or moody?
* Am I able to recognize upsets that others seem to be experiencing?
* Do I easily turn to friends or family members for a calming influence?
