Special neutropenia wards to manage the side effects of Chemotherapy are provided. The division intends to start Bone marrow transplant as soon as possible to provide world class treatment for blood cancers.

WHAT IS MEDICAL ONCOLOGY

Medical Oncology is the science of treating and curing cancer with anticancer drugs. Anticancer drugs are of various types like chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy, targeted monoclonal antibodies etc. These act on the cancer cells to either kill them directly or indirectly.A combined treatment using anticancer drugs along with surgery and/or radiotherapy achieves a greater therapeutic effect.

The department of medical oncology is responsible for diagnosing and treating all cases of hematological malignancies as well as giving chemotherapy to majority of the solid tumors in various settings. Medical oncology is the subspecialty of oncology which deals with the medical management of cancer. A medical oncologist has knowledge of all aspects of the treatment of cancer including chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and biological therapy. The specialist determines the proper choice of drugs, dosage, and schedule of the drugs to be given. This is called, protocol making, which is a highly skilled job. It involves patients full diagnostic work-up, staging, and assessing patients fitness for receiving a particular chemotherapy protocol.

The consultants of this department are qualified and highly experienced. Their efforts by commitimg themselves to patient care has resulted in improved survival rates and reduced morbidity. Dr. Abhishek Joshi, MD, DM, ECMO has done his specialization in oncology (DM) after his MD in medicine. He also a European Certified Medical Oncologist. He has been trained at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and he is also the member of oncology task force, ICMR, New Delhi. He has worked at Assistant Professor in Medicine at Government Medical College, Surat and also as Assistant Professor in medicine (Critical Care) at UNMIC and research Centre, Ahmedabad.

The department practices high dose rate chemotherapy, ambulatory chemotherapy by using drug delivery system like pumps etc. The nursing staff as well as the junior doctors are well versed in caring for patients with long term venous access devices and implantable ports. This department is also active in strengthening the hospital infection prevention programme.

DAY CARE CHEMOTHERAPY WARDS

The department boasts of a specialized ward for day care chemotherapy administration. Chemotherapy and targeted or immunotherapy is administered through infusion pumps under round the clock supervision of cancer care nurses trained in chemotherapy. This day care administration allows the patient to walk home the same day after chemotherapy infusion saving both time and resources.

NEUTROPENIA WARDS

Neutropenic patients require special care to prevent microbial colonization and infection. Isolation and asepsis are essential. The department has isolated private rooms dedicated to neutropenia care.

CHEMOTHERAPY

Chemotherapy and Hormone Therapy are predominantly aimed at trying to kill or stabilize the tumour growth.

The drugs may be administered in a variety of ways including intravenously, intramuscularly or they may be able to be taken orally.
