What is Overweight & Obesity?
Overweight and Obesity are defined as abnormal or
excessive fat accumulation that may impair health.
What is Morbid Obesity?
Morbid Obesity is a serious disease process, in which the
accumulation of fatty tissue on the body becomes excessive, and interferes with,
or injures the other bodily organs causing serious and life-threatening health
problems.
Morbid Obesity
is defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher.
What is BMI?
To understand Morbid Obesity we have to know the Body Mass
Index (BMI). Body Mass Index is a
simple and Widely used method for estimating body fat mass. It calculates body
fat based on the relationship of weight and height. The formula for calculating
BMI is :
BMI = Weight (in kgs) / Height² (in Metres)
Normal Range =
18.5 – 24.9
Over Weight = >=25
Pre-Obese = 25-29.9
Obese I = 30-34.9
Obese II = 35-39.9
Obese III = >=40
What causes Morbid Obesity?
Weight Gain=
Calories Consumed>Calories Used Factors include :
having food high in fats and sugars, decreased physical activity.
What are Health Consequences of Morbid Obesity?
Morbid
Obesity Leads to-
- Cardiovascular Disease
(mainly heart disease and stroke) – already the world's No. 1 cause of death,
killing 17 million people each year.
- Diabetes, which has become
a global epidemic. WHO projects that diabetes deaths will increase by more than
50% worldwide in the next 10 years.
- Osbeoarthritis.
- Some Cancers (Endometrial,
Breast and Colon).
Why should Morbid Obesity be treated?
- Morbid obesity is a
serious disease.
- It nearly effects every
organ in the body in some way and produces serious secondary illnesses, which
may also be life threatening.
- It interfere with a normal
and productive life, causes endless frustration and can seriously shorten life.
(Increased Mortality by twelve fold).
- Severe Obesity cannot be
controlled by patients themselves.
What are treatment options for Morbid Obesity?
Bariatric Surgery is a treatment option
for Morbid Obesity. These Mal-absorption operations cause weight loss by
decreasing absorption of calories from the intestines.
Choosing between the different operating procedures
involves the surgeon's
preference and consideration of the patient's eating
habits. All these procedures can be performed laparoscopically.

- Lap Band : The
laparoscopic gastric band procedure involves placing a ½ inch belt or collar
around the top portion of the stomach. This creates a small pouch and a fixed
outlet into the lower stomach. The adjustable band can be filled with sterile
saline. When saline is added, the outlet into the stomach is made smaller, which
further restricts food from leaving the pouch.
- Gastric Bypass : The
procedure involves dividing the stomach and forming a
small gastric pouch. The
new gastric pouch is connected to varying lengths of your own small intestine
constructed into a Y-shaped limb.

- Sleeve Gastrectomy : In
this procedure, the surgeon
removes approximately 60% of the stomach
laparoscopically so that the stomach takes the shape of a tube of “Sleeve”.
What are the advantages of Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery?
- Major Weight Loss
- Improvement in Hypertension,
Diabetes, Hyperlipedemia & Sleep Apnea
Who Should be considered for Laparoscopic Obesity
Surgery?
- BMI>35 with associated
co-morbidity
- BMI>40
- Repeated failure of other
methods of weight loss
The treatment and
management of Morbid Obesity Patients requires a comprehensive setup. A Surgeon,
dietitian, endocrinologist, physician, physiotherapist & a psychiatrist form
part of the team that deals with such cases.

Patients.
