LASER FOR ACNE TREATMENT
|
|
Skin disorders, such as acne can be irritating and embarrassing. Acne (also
known as pimples and blackheads ) is the most common skin problem and is the
number one reason worldwide for a visit to a dermatologist. In most men, acne is
worst during teenage years and then subsides. In women, menstruation flares
acne, which follows into teenage years and then into adulthood. If left
untreated, acne leads to the formation of small pockmark- like scars, which are
then permanent. This cosmetic disfigurement has to be then lived with throughout
life. Also , the presence of unseemly acne during teenage years leads to
emotional and social trauma, which hampers self-confidence . Acne is caused by
blocked pores that causes oil and bacteria to be trapped inside the skin. As the
oil and bacteria builds up, the skin becomes inflamed and swells outwards
forming whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. The laser produces a green light that
destroys the bacteria and reduces the oil production by the sebaceous glands in
the skin. |

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
|
Q:How does the laser help
clear acne?
The laser pulses light to the skin surface, targeting the
bacteria that cause acne. These bacteria are sensitive to laser light and are
destroyed when exposed to it.
Q:How long should
the treatment take?
Treatment times will vary depending on the size of the
treatment area. A full face will frequently take about 20 minutes.
Q:How many
treatment sessions are needed?
Generally one starts with a four treatment course, two per
week for two weeks. More treatments may be needed for those with more severe
acne.
Q:How long do the effects
last?
Most patients find their acne improves after two weeks of
twice weekly treatments. While many patients continue to improve over the months
following treatment, some people experience a plateau in their improvement.
Repeated treatments may be necessary to maintain results.
Q:What happens during the
treatment session?
After
discussing your medical history with your laser clinician, including any drugs
you are currently taking, the treatment area will be cleaned and a thin layer of
clear gel will be applied. Your practitioner will glide the laser handpiece over
the treatment area in a brushing motion as the laser light is pulsed safely
through the skin.
Q:Is it painful?
Many patients describe the laser pulses as feeling like
the snap of a rubber band against the skin; however treatments done over active
lesions may be more uncomfortable. Your laser clinician may recommend a topical
anesthetic in order to make treatments more comfortable.
Q:When do you see the
results?
Patients frequently see results within the first week
following treatment.
Q:What can you expect
immediately after treatment?
Immediately following the procedure patients may experience mild to moderate
redness and swelling that will usually fade in as little as a couple hours. It
is extremely important to apply a moisturiser with SPF30 sunblock and avoid sun
exposure on a daily basis to prevent sun damage.
